Ulysses

Ulysses made the first ever study of the particles and fields in the inner heliosphere at all solar latitudes, including the polar regions, and the first exploration of the dusk sector of Jupiter’s magnetosphere. Data from its mission added a new dimension to knowledge of the Sun’s environment. A joint ESA-NASA mission, Ulysses was launched in October 1990 on Space Shuttle Discovery and its mission was extended beyond its original five-year lifetime (in 1995) for a second solar orbit. It was deactived in 2009 after more than 18 years in space - one of the most successful and longest missions in spaceflight.
