United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, founded in 1959

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, a federal union of fifteen national republics spanning much of Eurasia, established in 1922. It was dissolved in 1991 and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was established in its place with nine member states.
